The official page of Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces announced on Saturday evening the disappearance of two U.S. soldiers participating in the African Lion 2026 exercise, near a cliff in the Cap Draa area, in the province of Tan-Tan.
According to the same source, the two soldiers were reported missing at around 9:00 p.m., under circumstances that remain unclear at this stage, prompting the mobilization of military and security services.
Following the report, the Royal Armed Forces, in coordination with their U.S. counterparts and units from other participating countries, launched extensive search and rescue operations, deploying land, air, and maritime resources as part of a highly coordinated field response.
The same source confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances and causes of the incident, noting that further updates will be provided as the situation develops and as findings emerge from the ongoing inquiries.
The African Lion 2026 exercise is among the largest multinational military drills in Africa, involving several countries, and aims to enhance operational readiness and joint military cooperation.
