The United Nations Security Council, in a statement published on the official UN website (Meetings Coverage and Press Releases section), expressed its full support for the Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy in their efforts to facilitate negotiations on the Sahara question.
The Council emphasized the need to adopt Morocco’s Autonomy Proposal as the basis for achieving a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution, in line with the principles of the United Nations Charter.
The Council welcomed any constructive proposals from the parties concerned in response to the Moroccan initiative and called for unconditional engagement in discussions aimed at reaching a final agreement that guarantees the right to self-determination of the population in the southern provinces, within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty.
The Security Council further acknowledged that “genuine autonomy represents the most realistic and achievable outcome”, urging all parties to present constructive ideas to support progress toward a final agreement.
Finally, the Council requested the Secretary-General to submit a strategic review within six months regarding the mandate of MINURSO, taking into account the progress achieved in the political process.
