Washington D.C. — Two National Guard members were injured on Tuesday evening in a shooting incident near the White House, according to multiple U.S. media outlets and official statements.
A senior source told The Associated Press (AP) that the two officers from the National Guard were struck by gunfire in an attack that occurred in close proximity to the White House perimeter
The White House Press Secretary confirmed that President Donald Trump has been briefed on the shooting involving two National Guard members, noting that the situation is being closely monitored by senior administration officials.
According to CNN, citing a source familiar with the incident, several people were shot, including at least one National Guard member, as emergency units rushed to secure the scene.
The Washington Metropolitan Police Department stated that the suspected shooter has been taken into custody, and that the area around the incident has been secured to ensure public safety.
In a separate statement, the White House spokesperson announced that the building was placed under temporary lockdown as a precaution while security agencies assessed the threat.
The Department of Homeland Security Secretary added that federal authorities are working closely with local law enforcement to gather additional information about the circumstances of the shooting near the White House.
