A powerful earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck the Balıkesir province in western Turkey on Monday evening, according to a statement from the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).
AFAD reported that the epicenter of the quake was located in the Sındırgı district and occurred at 10:48 p.m. local time, at a depth of 5.99 kilometers beneath the surface.
Eyewitnesses said the tremor was strongly felt in Istanbul and several surrounding provinces, causing concern among residents. No casualties or major damage have been reported so far, according to initial assessments.
Authorities continue to monitor and assess the situation in affected areas to ensure public safety.
