The South African newspaper IOL reported that Morocco is by far the number one tourist destination in Africa, thanks to its historical sites and breathtaking mountain and desert landscapes, outpacing Egypt and South Africa.
According to the article, Morocco welcomed 17.4 million visitors in 2024, compared to 15.7 million in Egypt, 10.25 million in Tunisia, 8.92 million in South Africa, and 2.4 million in Kenya.
“Africa is once again at the forefront of global travel,” wrote the newspaper, “whether it’s discovering Morocco’s wonders, shopping in its souks, exploring Egypt’s pyramids, or going on a safari in Kenya.”
The paper noted that tourism in Africa is experiencing consistent growth, as more people worldwide seek out experiences that blend nature, history, and culture.
Latest 2024 statistics show a noticeable increase in international arrivals, with several countries recording significant growth compared to the previous year. This positive trend is supported by improved infrastructure, stronger digital connectivity, and targeted promotional efforts for local destinations.
The article adds that North Africa remains in the lead, with countries like Morocco and Egypt attracting large numbers of tourists, thanks to their proximity to Europe and a wide array of historical and coastal attractions.
In contrast, East and Southern Africa remain key players in nature and wildlife tourism, offering safari experiences and stunning landscapes that continue to captivate visitors worldwide.
